Advice about writing a book?

I have a wonderfully touching story that i would like to tell. Sadly, I have had no formal training in the art of book writing, it's been 12 years since I graduated high school. I was, however, always exceptional in English class. What do you think my chances are?

Should I try to take a writing course before I even think about writing a book? I'm looking for honest answers, not smarta.sses!Advice about writing a book?
I would take a writing class. You will feel frustrated because you will be doing home work assignments and this will take you away from your current story. But some good things will happen here.

1) You'll get used to the idea of someone reading your material and form constructive criticism for you. You won't find this with a friend or family member.

2) You'll learn the discipline of writing. This will help you down the road. This involves writing something, no matter what, every day.

3) Your teacher/ad visor may be able to guide you to achieving your long term goals. (i.e. publishing your book)

it couldnt hurt to at least go take comp 1 and comp 2 and maybe a creative writing course....you'd be surprised at what you've forgotten that is so important and you dont realize it....recently my daughters challenged me with their english homework and although i did fare okay there were still some things that i went back and read up on...good luck on your book...hey you could also have someone write it for you
Just write. Write write write. See what happens. Down the road, take a course. If writing is in your heart then just do it. You don't need lessons.
Practice makes perfect. It doesn't matter that you have graduated 12 yrs ago.Just start writing 3 pages early in the morning, without any topic, about anything. And remember that writers are not special, they are as ordinary as teachers, shopkeepers and soldiers. So you are not going to do a special job.You want to express yourself.
Definitely take a creative writing class. Go to the library and read several issues of Writer's Digest. Then you might be ready to tackle writing. It is a hard, lonely job that takes enormous discipline with few rewards. Be prepared for rejection. Then plan on publishing yourself and never receive a comment on it.
As a fellow aspiring author, I would recommend a book called, ';The First Five Pages.'; You can get it on Amazon. You have to make your story riveting from the start. If the first five pages are slow and don't develop, a publisher will throw it out. Of course grammar should be good, too.

Look at http://www.right-writing.com/index.html for methods of finding an agent, publisher and writing tips like making colorful dialogue.

http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/ has some good refresher tips on grammar I find helpful, as I have been out of college for about 10 years myself.

I also like to send my brother some drafts to see if I convey my story well. You should probably have a close friend be an honest critic for you.
A lot of writers don't have formal training.. But the best thing for you to do would be take the writing class the hardest thing for writers is getting published but I think if you want it bad enough you'll get it good luck and let us know when you've made it...
If you had good marks in English class, you probably have a very good chance of getting published. What I would do is just write your story and then maybe take a few writing courses afterwards to brush up on it.

Good Luck!
