I need any and all advice about my puppy.?

We just got her, she is 11 wk old yellow lab. We have an old dog that is 12 human yrs he is a sheltie. I want to make the transistion comfy for the old man. Also any other puppy advice would be good. It has been so long since I had to train a puppy! My old man dog does not seem as jealous as I thought he would be, he actually acts younger because they play together. He has had a really bad yr. His hip dysplasia has gotten worse and he was attacked by a german shepard. The vet was suprised that he made it. He has healed wonderfully. We wanted to get a pup because we are not sure how much longer Max will be w/ us. We are hoping that the pup will learn by example, has anyone had that happen? We bought Puppy Training For Dummies, which is what we used on Max back when he was a pup. I just love max so much, he is the most well behaved, loving, and loyal dog I ever could have wanted. I only hope our puppy can be as special as he is. Thank you, LisaI need any and all advice about my puppy.?
you brought up max well, so im sure youll be fine with your new pup - labs are one of the easiest dogs to train if you do it consistently like you are supposed to.

one thing though, if max has hip dysplasia, be careful about how much and how rough he plays with the pup - he could be quite sore later in the day. If he does get sore on a regular basis, you can get safe anti-inflammatories from your vet to help ease the problem.

also as max gets older and sorer and the pup still wants to play, you might have to seperate them on occasion so he can get some rest. He will also have less patience for the pup.

we just got a lab puppy also. and we have a older dog too. out lab was soo hard to train at fisrt. and now if he dosnt have a bone or toy he chews up EVERYTHING. but he has learned to get us when he wants out and he brings his dish to us when he wants food. wich he learned from our older dog. so make sure he has plenty of toys and stuff. and im sure he will learn from the older dog. good luck! i love labs!
if it worked on Max it will work on the new pup. Lab's are not hard dogs to train, they love to learn so you might even be able to teach the new pup more then the book wil offer.

Good luck!
I don't think your other dog will be jealous. He will, as you noticed, be acting younger. And in a way he will be a teacher for your puppy. Coz your puppy will try and copy him in a lot of things. So, this is a good thing since you said that your dog is wonderful, well behaved, and loyal.

I hope I helped a little
I have in my own experience gotten a puppy who did indeed learn from my older dog. The puppy even took on a little of my old dogs personality. Granted, she is defiantly different, but she got a lot of great behaviors from my other dog. Just show your new puppy lots of love and make it listen.
sometimes the old dog needs a little time and sp!ce to himself and can get annoyed with the young pup bouncing all over him all the time.

help him out by creating a quiet space in your home that the young fella can't get to him, such as a fifferent room with the door shut, or a child safety gate between two rooms!
Max might make a good infulence on the new puppy, but keep in mind that all dogs have their own personalities. Good luck!
sounds like the transition went well if they are playing together, yes puppies do learn by example, if possible let them out together or walk together and maybe some of the good things will rub off on the pup. Good Luck!
