well these people don't know what they are saying, winter it is a little bit cold, and summer there are lots of mosquitoes, but there are lots of different thing that can be done in this area, snowmobiling in the winter and fishing and boating in the summer, you can play just about any sport you want too, lots of places to drink and party. the crime is not that bad a few beatings and homicide's lots of car thefts, but other then that ain't that bad, cost of living is low compared to the western side of this country, lots of different cultures here, and lots of high class concerts, and shows. over all i would rather be in Winnipeg and area then any other Canadian city, oh yea there is also lots of single good looking lady's too!Thinking about relocating from Scotland to Winnipeg- Any advice?
bring your bag pipes as they roll up the sidewalks at 8 pm
I am a Winnipegger who has been living in Scotland for one year. Compared to most places in Scotland, Winnipeg is very inexpensive. There is a bit of crime in Winnipeg, just like any other city but there is a lot less crime in Winnipeg than in Glasgow. I find the pubs and clubs in Winnipeg not quite as lively as those in Scotland but there are a few good ones. The King's Head and the Toad in the Hole can be quite lively sometimes. It can also be difficult to get around Winnipeg if you don't have a car; the bus service isn't the fastest or most efficient. There are festivals and events in the city throughout the year. This is a good website to find out about entertainment and cultural events: http://www.whatsonwinnipeg.com/
Winnipeg is pretty much just an average city.
Why on earth would you leave the beauty of Scotland for the cold Canada interior? No job is worth that...he he.
Here are some things that Canadians say about Winnipeg:
- It's nickname is ';winterpeg'; because it has recorded the coldest winter temperatures in all of Canada several years running.
- Manitoba is so flat that if a person left their house and walked west for two days, they could still see their home on the horizon.
All kidding aside, I heard Winnipeg has high crime rate, high taxes, and not much to do there, especially in the winter months. The natives have a high rate of alcoholism and suicide, which tends to go with the poverty and unemployment rate. The northern part of the city is more run down than other sections.
I lived in Winnipeg for 6 months with my husband. The cost of living is very high. You might think that houses are cheap, but the amount you pay in property tax makes the house cost just as much as the rest of the country. Our property taxes in Winnipeg were $4500/year on a similar house in Calgary we pay $1600 and Calgary is a much nicer city.
Winnipeg is VERY VERY cold in the winter and gets HUGE amounts of snow. They have a very high crime rate. They do have a lot of different culture and entertainment in the city. The mosquito's are so bad in the summer you don't want to go outside.
Winnipeg is a great place to VISIT family but not a great place to live. When my husband lost his job there I could not have been happier it got us out of that terrible city.
If I were you I would not move to Winnipeg, I'm sorry but you asked! Move to Alberta there is so much opportunity here. You could get a job here in 5 minutes. What do you do? Calgary is growing like crazy and a great place to live.
Good luck!
Winnipeg is the coldest city in Canada during the winter months; summers are hot and dry.
There are a lot of native Canadian Indians living in Winnipeg many of which are good people; but there is a high percentage of alcoholism among the natives and you would want to be informed before choosing where you live in the city.
I have been told that musicians do very well in Winnipeg, apparently it has good night clubs.
The University of Manitoba is in Winnipeg. Try checking out www.winnipeg.ca.
Canada is an awesome country. Good Luck.
i don't know why all these people discouraging us, I'm moving to Manitoba too and i asked too about it but most of answers was disappointing. i don't think that Manitoba is that bad. here is a site that can give u some information about Winnipeg. good luck.

I've lived in Winnipeg my entire life and love it. It's a big city but you can still get around without it taking forever. We have loads of festivals during the summer %26amp; there is something to do practically every weekend. They get more snow than we do on the east coast %26amp; in Montreal.
I moved here 1 year ago from Italy... it's not the easiest place to live: winters are extremely cold (but far less snow then in eastern Canada! and summers are great), bus service is good in some areas but worse in others, the city is very much spread out and not very pedestrian friendly, as very few people walk around compared to Europe; but if you get a car, it's a heaven, with huge streets and a lot of parking everywhere. The city has been built for cars, and people drive everywhere.
Downtown is actually beautiful and huge (do not listen to other people with random statements...), it's divided into the skyscraper area, where many people do not feel comfortable to go because of beggars, but the situation improved a lot in one year already; historical area (Exchange District); and the Forks, a huge park, crowded, on the rivers with restaurants, market, pubs etc. and something going on almost every weekend in summer.
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is supposed to be built at the Forks:

Nature is beautiful: there are ecological reserves inside the city or very close, rivers, animals, and it's very close to beaches, forests, deserts, etc. However, the area around the city is VERY flat and is mostly cropped prairie, and may look boring. Skies are huge and vividly colorful.
There is a big underground scene with punk, rock, folk music and art, and so on, very good I have been told the West End cultural centre. There are 2 important museums, the top ballet in Canada, orchestra, a lot of festivals, A LOT of restaurants, etc.
The crime ridden areas are West End, North End and Elmwood (west, north and northeast of downtown), but they're also a bit more vibrant in many cases.
But overall, especially in the beginning and from an outsider, the city is not as lively as european cities and may seem a bit depressing. You just need to get friends i guess.
If you have more questions, you can contact me.
Arrr. It's boring and cold and if you live south of the city, it floods too!
Arrrrr!
Yeah don't come too Winnipeg, When there are much more BEAUTIFUL places in Canada such as Calgary Ottawa Montreal Victoria. Winnipeg is dirty crime ridden and you can't walk anywhere in this city without somebody bugging you for ';spare change';
Well, I've lived in Winnipeg for about 7 years now. To me it's home. It's a nice city. The people are generally nice. Cost of living in my opinion is cheap compared to other Canadian cities. My husband and I purchased a home 4 years ago and our property taxes are very affordable. It all depends on the area you live in. As far as crime and safety, yes, there's crime but I feel safe in my neighbourhood. We know all our neighbours. As far as entertainment goes, there's always lots going on. My husband is a musician and has plenty of opportunity to play here.
Besides being cold, it is a nice city. The summers are nice, nice beaches close by, campgrounds, etc.
Good luck on your decision making!!!
winnepeg is a dump, they have one mall and not a whole lot else to do, their downtown core is smaller than north york's (which is sad cause north york is a 'suburb' of toronto) i would not want to live there, i feel sorry for my cousins who spend all their time reading archie comics and going to the ONE mall. i would be an alcoholic if i were in winnepeg, theres NOTHING to do!
