I would recommend putting a little desk bell at the door. EVERY time you go out with him, tap the desk bell. After a few times, you can take his foot and tap the bell and praise him, big time..Each time he goes outside, either tap the bell or have him do it..You can use kitten kibble for training treats, as they are tiny and won't ruin his appetite.
Cavalier King Charles are very smart. He should soon catch on to tapping the bell, getting his praise or treat, and asking to be let out.
Also, ROUTINE is very helpful in house training a puppy. Feed him 3 times per day at the very same time, and remove his dish as soon as he turns away from it..Note when he has to go after eating, and take him just before that time..(it should be within 30 minutes) Also, walking him on a leash will keep him more focused on 'going'. as you aren't allowing him to play until he does it. Walking stimulates the bowels to move more than just wondering around the yard.
Allowing a puppy to jump on them isn't going to encourage dominance, but will encourage poor behavior. he will think it ok to jump on visitors, snag stockings, and get people muddy. Do have the kids stop allowing him to jump on them.. all they need to do is tell him 'no jump' and ignore him if he continues.. he is jumping out of enthusiasm, and it is normal.. but, if they ignore him when he persists, then he will soon learn that it doesn't get him attention, but just the opposite.Help need some advice about my cavalier king charles dog?
13 weeks is still very young. He may be able to hold it, but when he needs to go, he needs to go NOW, when he's having a really good time, like playing with the kids, he doesn't think about it until it's too late %26amp; then he has to go!
Sounds as if you're doing everyhthing right, you just have to be patient. Try watching him when he is indoors, he probably will give you a sign that he wants to out, but it will be very subtle. It might only be a quick glance at the door where he usually goes. Our puppy just sits in a particular place %26amp; stares at us!
KCKS are very sweet dogs, I wouldn't worry about him jumping on the kids unless he starts getting too rough with them. You don't say how old they are but, under your guidance, get them to do some basic obedience with him (one at a time, obviously %26amp; away from distractions) Just a couple of minutes, teaching him to sit, down, come etc.
k,, no papers in crate,,, make sure crate isn't too big... you don't want him to pee on one side , sleep on the other,,, try feedin him only 2 times a day... morning and evening,,, take him out last thing at night ( the latest you can) and first thing in morning.. he should very well be able to hold it for 6 - 7 hours at night.... bring him in after peeing in morning , feed him and right back out immediately for poops... he should then be fine for awhile in the house,,, then back out after naps, playing, etc... also,,,, try switching to a premium dog food,,, feed only dry kibble moistened with some warm water... no canned etc.. it could very well be poor quality food that is giving him the poopies... good luck..... cavvies are nice dogs.
ok,I have a king charles but you say papers in crate is it his bed?
Dogs do not go to the toilet in their bed and maybe he's getting mixed signals about this ,treat the cage as his bed last thing at night bring him outside once he has gone to toilet get him into his crate for bed ,it should just be a nice blanket or pillow in morning it should be dry.
During day if he needs sleep again put him the crate as it is his bed he shouldn't do anything in it.
After eating he should be allowed out and after waking he should be let out.
The pooing last night you say you let him out, its ok letting him out but make sure he has done his business ,when he is going Say ';go potty'; and even be beside him and give him a little treat mine loves cubes of cheese.
This will take a while but soon you will be able to open door and say go potty and he will go instead of a run around and not go.
When he does go in the house what i did was say bad dog and stick outside straight away this was in early days but was rare.
He is just playing with the kids and will be all over them although as he grows it could be annoying if hes dirty paws and jumps up and dirtys your clothes just a light push down ,look for a puppy trainer king charles can be hard to train and a nightmare of the lead ,they are bad with traffic and birds can send them daft .
Before going out say for an hour let him outside and then bring in and lock in crate till you get back all he will do is sleep.
Well, when a dog exercises, it helps them go poo. As he gets older, he can hold it longer, but you'll have to build him up to this. It sounds like you've really got a good dog.
The way we've trained puppies in the past is to encourage them to go on a newspaper near to where they sleep at night. Then day by day move the newspapers closer to the back door. This has an effect of teaching them that the back door is connected with them wanting to go. Leave the newspapers by the back door for about a week, then move them just outside the door. Your puppy should then become a little agitated that the newspapers are not there. Once you open the door your puppy will see the newspaper and hopefully start using it outside. After around another week move the newspapers to a more suitable area in the garden. After a little time your puppy will learn to only go outside and the newspapers won't be needed anymore. Don't forget to give plenty of praise. I hope this helps you.
We had a Cavalier King Charles and he was adorable - we miss him. We now have a Bichon Frise and she's a crazy little thing - a white, fluffy whirlwind!
