I want to start a law and business degree next year by distance. I work full time and have an 18 month old son but i know that i can fit it in and be good at it. It will take 6 years at which time i will be 30 years old. Do you think the job prospects would be good at that time as i currently work in finance so i would have had no law experienceThinking about studying law by distance any advice?
I'm getting my masters from a local university-all online. Pick a reputable university or college, but be aware, competition is keen to get into law school, and getting a job as a lawyer is also very competitive. But the US Dept of Labor says the job outlook is still good for lawyers:
Employment of lawyers is expected to grow about as fast as average for all occupations through 2014, primarily as a result of growth in the population and in the general level of business activities. Job growth among lawyers also will result from increasing demand for legal services in such areas as health care, intellectual property, venture capital, energy, elder, antitrust, and environmental law. In addition, the wider availability and affordability of legal clinics should result in increased use of legal services by middle-income people.
However, growth in demand for lawyers will be limited as businesses, in an effort to reduce costs, increasingly use large accounting firms and paralegals to perform some of the same functions that lawyers do. For example, accounting firms may provide employee-benefit counseling, process documents, or handle various other services previously performed by a law firm. Also, mediation and dispute resolution increasingly are being used as alternatives to litigation.
More good new: Perhaps as a result of competition for attorney positions, lawyers are increasingly finding work in nontraditional areas for which legal training is an asset, but not normally a requirement鈥攆or example, administrative, managerial, and business positions in banks, insurance firms, real estate companies, government agencies, and other organizations. Employment opportunities are expected to continue to arise in these organizations at a growing rate.
A combo of law and business sounds like a great choice!
Good luck!Thinking about studying law by distance any advice?
i assume you're 24
lots of law students are that age internationally,
(here in australia, most graduate by their 22 :) although i wont coz im 20 now)
doing a double degree in your circumstances is going to be tough
postgrads take law more seriously than undergrads and they work harder too, but dont always get the better mark
if you want to do that double degree, dont study full time, take it easy, and your son wants you too
my advice is to make friends at uni quickly, and get access to notes so you dont have to read heaps of textbooks, and find a decent person to help you out-
in 1st year i was helping out postgrads in my class- there were 3 of them- they all thought i was a legend, - also i met people online who helped me out too- my contacts were great and i still help younger students when they are really lost and dont know what to do.
which country are u in?
email me if u want more info
edit: 1st year is always a pain but the workload decreases over time- so dont think its going to keep being that hard always... my HS teacher tried to do law, but he got another son and decided to stop after 1 semester
in order to be allowed to take your state bar exam to become a lawyer you must have graduated from approved ABA law school, now i have heard of night school but never one where it was just correspondence
Go for it girl! I wanted to study law sooo bad.
