It depends on how old you are. If you're still at school, start reading about law. if you're in the UK, read The Times which sometimes has reports about court cases. Sit in on a trial : most courts have public galleries. Visit the Law Society website, this being the body which regulates lawyers in the UK. It will tell you what some of the issues are facing the legal profession : try www.lawsociety.org.uk There are also lots of books which explain various areas of law in ';laymans'; terms and which are often aimed at students.

Ask perhaps to do work experience at a law firm and if you're about to choose where to go to university, choose to do law. It takes usually threee years, and there's also the Legal Practice Course or LPC which lasts a year and comes after your initial degree. You can become a lawyer in the UK without having a degree in law, in which case the LPC lasts two years and is called somehting else which at this point in time I don't know the initials of.

If you want to help people, work for a firm in the UK that does legal aid, the government scheme where peoples legal costs are paid for them if they are deemed not to be able to afford them themselves. If you want to make lots and lots of money, then work in the City of London for a law firm there.

Good luck.I want to be a lawyer and need some advice about how to be one.?
Do well in undergraduate school. Undergraduate grades make up a significant part of your desirability as a law student. I am not trying to be sarcastic, what I mean is take it seriously and try to get the best grades you can.

Do well on the LSAT. You can purchase old exams from the LSAT and take them as practice. If you do not do well with multiple choice, take a Kaplan course or other course to prepare. I understand there is also an essay element now. If you do not do well on the practice exams, you might want to take a prep course.

For many law schools, community service is also considered. Do some volunteer work for an organization you believe in. It will enhance your life as well as making you a more desirable law school candidate.

Go to the best school that accepts you, even if you have to borrow more money. The law school that you go to will always be the first thing on your resume.

Work hard at law school. It is MUCH more competitive than undergraduate, and it is strictly curved. Your grades, along with your law school, will always be the first thing on your resume.

Take a bar prep course before taking the bar. The bar exam is much different than a law school exam.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: make sure you want to be an attorney. Attorneys usually work 60+ hours per week. They have a lot of stress and have a lot of work commitments. That said, it can be a very rewarding profession for the right person.

Hope that helps!

Best of luck!
Be able to argue about anything and be able to comment on what's in a law without reading it.
